Happy St. Patrick’s Day

I didn’t even realize that it was Saint Patrick’s day until I had already left home, so I’m not wearing any green, oops! A good friend of mine told me why Saint Patrick is so famous. The myth is that he drove all of the snakes out of Ireland. The actual science behind no snakes being in Ireland is that it is too cold, being surrounded by cold ocean water. However the myth is ambiguous, and could mean that he drove the shady people out of Ireland. Why don’t you tell me?

To celebrate St. Patrick’s day, here’s a tasty Irish recipe if you’re in the mood! It’s called Shepherd’s Pie and judging by the ingredients, it doesn’t look good. However I can testify that it is quite delicious! Note that this recipe is for a large helping to be made in a casserole pan (feeds 5-8 people)

Incredients:

  • 2 lbs of lean ground beef
  • 1 chopped onion (can add another for more flavor)
  • 1/2 cup of diced carrots
  • 1/2 cup of peas
  • 1 cup of corn
  • 1 full stick of butter (8 Tbsp)
  • 1 Tbsp of Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 big potatoes
  • 1/2 cup of Swanson’s beef broth (you can substitute a different brand for Swanson’s)
  • 6 slices of American cheese (you can substitute shredded cheese if you’d like)
  • seasoning salt, lemon pepper, and any other seasonings you see fit

Directions:

  1. Peel potatoes and boil for 20 minutes
  2. melt half of the butter in a big frying pan while potatoes are cooking
  3. Saute the onions and carrots for ten minutes
  4. Add the ground beef to the frying pan and cook until no pink is left
  5. Add seasonings to the pan
  6. Add the broth, peas, and corn to the frying pan
  7. Mash the potatoes with the remaining butter in a bowl
  8. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  9. Put everything in the frying pan into a casserole dish as evenly as possible
  10. Add the mashed potatoes to the top of the meat and veggie mix, distributing evenly
  11. Put the cheese on the top of the potatoes as evenly as you can, and put in the oven for about 20 minutes
  12. ENJOY!

Let me know how your dinner went, and if you added your own twist to it!
